Car Talk: Stairway to Heapdom Still More Disrespectful Car Songs
Way back in the Pleistocene Era, when Car Talk was just getting started, we thought it would be fun to play excerpts from car songs as we went to station breaks. We figured we'd run out of songs in about 10 weeks, but since we expected the show to be canceled in nine, we weren't worried.
Now, decades later, we're still playing different car songs every week. And it turns out that, unlike the Beach Boys and the Ripchords, the vast majority of car songs aren't singing praises to American Iron -- rather, they tend to be a bit disrespectful, and sometimes even contemptuous. Many songs tell of the trials and travails of car ownership -- songs about true heaps, and those cars that are on the path to certified heapdom.
A few years ago, we put out two volumes of great disrespectful car songs (Car Tunes and Born Not to Run), and they were incredibly popular! So we've asked David Greene, the Dean of the Department of Automusicology here at Car Talk Plaza -- the world's foremost authority on disrespectful car tunes -- to compile this third volume of some of the great songs that have appeared on Car Talk recently.
You'll hear all your recent favorites: Beep, Beep, Beep (Moonlight Sonata) from Beethoven's Wig, 90 Pound Suburban Housewife (Drivin' in her SUV), the clever play on words Car Song by Todd Butler, plus 14 more! There's even one tune that features(?) the semi-melodic voices of a certain pair of radio hosts -- but we promise, only one!
Packaged in an eco-friendly cardboard wallet (no plastic jewel case), with a complete write-up of each song and artist, this collection is sure to please the Car Talk fan in your life. Makes a great holiday gift!
